Why You Should Pack a Portable Speaker

One of the first gadgets I bought to enhance my travels was a small Bluetooth speaker. It has actually come in handy for quite a bit more than I thought it would, so I figured it would be worth writing about.

Obviously Music

I mean, why else would you buy a speaker? We'll get to that, but I greatly enjoy being able to put on some music while I'm getting ready for the day in my hotel room. Especially with the crazy early morning starts! I actually wrote an article about that here. It adds a little extra energy to the morning. Bonus points for getting one that's waterproof or at least water resistant because you can have shower music. It's also fun if you've got a particularly long sit and are hanging out at the airport with your crew on the airplane waiting to board your next flight. Nothing wrong with a little added atmosphere in the cabin!

You Can Connect to Your TV

There have been a few occasions where I've stayed in rooms where the TVs don't have great sound. On other occasions, I've been able to connect my computer or iPad to the TV in the hotel room via HDMI, but for some reason the ability to control the volume is totally nonexistent. On a couple of those occasions, the volume of the TV has been up at its max, and I've had no way to adjust it back down to a reasonable level. To this day I have no idea if that's some sort of prank (it scared the living daylights outta me, so it definitely worked) or if it's just because some hotels put a lock on their TVs so that you have to pay for their content. In any case, every time that's happened, I've been able to Bluetooth my speaker to my computer so that I can have good audio. More often than not, you can still connect your device to the TV so that you're not limited to a small laptop screen.

It Beats Computer Speakers

I spend quite a bit of time on YouTube and laptop speakers are generally no good, so it's actually really nice to have a speaker to enhance the sound. Obviously you could use headsets, but for those times where you don't want to have to deal with it, it's nice to just be able to pull out a speaker. At the very least, if you can't connect your device to the hotel TV, you still have good audio.

This is the one I bought if you are at all interested; for the price and the size it's surprisingly good. Enjoy some good tunes on the go!
